I spent a number of years working as Senior Designer for Colorado vNet. One of the truly great things about working in a startup environment is the value and opportunity to take what would be considered risky choices at more established companies. The looping show demo used for CEDIA was one such opportunity. Without a a great deal of time and little budget for video, the decision was made to use PowerPoint to create both the looping standalone demo, and one accompanied by a presenter.
It was a smashing success. Not only did the piece meld perfectly with the rest of the booth graphics, but when viewed on glorious 60″ plasma screens, it looked for all the world like an HD video or Flash production instead of humble PowerPoint. I know a lot of designers out there will likely roll there eyes at that, but believe me it did the trick. Not only that, but during the course of the show we were able to tweak the presentation practically in real time to test out how it fared with traffic and the presenter’s audience, an option that would not have been available with HD video.
